New commissioner David Stern made his impact felt on the NBA on his first Super Sunday at the helm, with Eastern Conference rivals Philadelphia and Boston the only game on the schedule.

The 76ers came in with a 33-6 record, just ahead of the 33-7 Celtics in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference races.

But on this Super Sunday at the Boston Garden, it was Larry Bird who reigned supreme.

Bird finished with 38 points on 15-of-26 shooting, including 2-of-3 from long distance, to go with nine rebounds, four assists, three blocked shots and two steals in a thoroughly dominating 113-97 win for the defending NBA champions.

Bird was en route to his second straight NBA MVP award in 1984-85, a season in which he averaged 28.7 points (a career-high), 10.5 rebounds, 6.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks on .522/.427/.882 shooting.

That night in Super Bowl XIX at Stanford Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif., MVP Joe Montana led the San Francisco 49ers to the first 18-1 season in NFL history with a 38-16 thumping of record-setting QB Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins.
