15. Norm Van Lier, Chicago Bulls at Seattle SuperSonics, Jan. 12, 1975
The Chicago Bulls were locked in a tight battle with the Detroit Pistons for first place in the NBA’s Midwest Division when they arrived at Seattle Center Coliseum for a midseason matchup with the Seattle SuperSonics.
The Bulls came in off a three-game winning streak, having won the night before at Golden State. The Sonics hadn’t played since absorbing a 25-point loss at home to the Warriors on Friday night.
The game was tight throughout. The Bulls led 26-22 after one period and clung to a 53-50 edge at halftime.
Seattle came back to tie the game after three periods, 78-78, and the score remained knotted at the end of regulation, 106-106.
A five-minute overtime period couldn’t decide things as the weary clubs headed to a second extra session tied at 116-116. Chicago broke through in the second overtime for a 127-123 victory.
Norm Van Lier was spectacular, scoring a career-high 42 points. He posted a career-high average of 15 points per game in 1974-75 to go with averages of 5.8 assists and two steals per game while on his way to being named All-Defensive for the fifth consecutive season.
In Super Bowl IX, the Pittsburgh Steelers won their first-ever championship by beating the Minnesota Vikings at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, 16-6, behind the MVP efforts of running back Franco Harris.
