2. Clyde Drexler, Portland Trail Blazers vs. New York Knicks, Jan. 22, 1989
The New York Knicks arrived at Memorial Coliseum to face a Portland Trail Blazers team that had lost two straight, while looking to snap their own three-game skid that had been extended with a 121-119 loss at Seattle the night before.
Clyde Drexler, Portland’s All-Star shooting guard, did everything he could to deny the Knicks, but New York came back late for a 120-116 win.
But you can’t pin it on Drexler, who finished with 48 points on 20-of-28 shooting to go with 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals in the loss.
It was during a 1988-89 campaign during which Drexler put up a career-high 27.2 points per game to go with 7.9 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 2.5 steals a contest while shooting .506/.212/.811.
At Super Bowl XXIII at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., Jerry Rice was the MVP as the San Francisco 49ers staged a final minute drive to beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 20-16.
