6. Bo Lamar, San Diego Conquistadors vs. Indiana Pacers (ABA), Jan. 13, 1974

The San Diego Conquistadors were a second-year ABA expansion team still trying to find their footing (spoiler alert, they didn’t, folding early in the 1975-76 season), while the Indiana Pacers were the two-time defending league champions.

But at Golden Hall in San Diego on Super Bowl Sunday in 1974, rookie guard Bo Lamar had a career day, pouring in a career-best 50 points to pace the Conquistadors to a 141-130 victory over Indiana.

Lamar had been a third-round pick out of Southwestern Louisiana by the Detroit Pistons in the 1973 NBA Draft, but opted to sign with San Diego, and he led the ABA in 3-pointers and 3-point attempts in 1973-74 while averaging 20.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game on .397/.279/.777 shooting.

Lamar’s pro career was short-lived. He played in San Diego until the franchise folded, then finished out the ABA’s final days with the Pacers before spending one season with the Los Angeles Lakers following the 1876 merger.

The Super Bowl was also won by a product of an upstart league. The Miami Dolphins beat the Minnesota Vikings at Rice Stadium in Houston in Super Bowl VII, 24-7.
