NBA: 25 Least-Deserving NBA All-Stars
By Phil Watson
18. Allen Iverson, 2010
How Chosen: Fan voting
Allen Iverson had a very eventful 2009-10 season. He signed with the Memphis Grizzlies as a free agent in September, was waived by the Grizzlies in mid-November after playing just three games in Memphis and signed with the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent in early December.
Bubba Chuck was averaging 14.4 points, 4.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game on .448/.360/.803 shooting in 25 pre-break games, including 22 starts, but got enough votes for his 11th straight All-Star appearance.
This selection may have ended up higher on the list, except outside of the guys already at the All-Star Game it was a fairly dismal year for Eastern Conference guards.
Jamal Crawford of the Atlanta Hawks stands out as a worthy alternative, however. Working off the bench for a Hawks’ club that was 33-18 at the break, Crawford was averaging 17.8 points, 2.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 30.5 minutes per game on .464/.382/.848 shooting while en route to the first of his two NBA Sixth Man of the Year awards.
Iverson was replaced due to injury by David Lee of the New York Knicks, while Crawford’s teammate, Joe Johnson, started in his place. The East won the game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, 141-139.
It was Iverson’s final season in the NBA, but this year’s All-Star Weekend could be potentially huge for AI, who will learn whether or not he is a first-ballot inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
