Phoenix Suns: 5 Long-Term Replacements For Jeff Hornacek
5. Mike D’Antoni
Ever since he left the Phoenix Suns, Mike D’Antoni has an ugly 188-254 record (.425) as an NBA head coach. He resigned from the New York Knicks after three and a half unsuccessful seasons and did the same after two even more abysmal seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. But anytime a Suns vacancy opens up, you can guarantee the father of the Seven Seconds or Less Suns will see his name included.
In five unforgettable seasons with the Suns, D’Antoni and Steve Nash helped revolutionize the game of basketball with a fast-paced, high flying offense that spaced the floor with shooters and pushed the tempo in a way that was eventually perfected by the Golden State Warriors. D’Antoni never won a championship like the Dubs did, but he posted a 232-96 record (.707) in his four seasons with Nash.
Unfortunately, as much as this would be a happy, nostalgic hire, those great Suns teams had WAY more talent than this current rendition.
Mike D could probably be lured out of his associate coaching job with the Philadelphia 76ers, but based on what D’Antoni has been unable to accomplish the last few years without an MVP-caliber player like Nash or All-Stars like Amar’e Stoudemire and Shawn Marion, this is one reunion that should never happen.
