NBA: 15 Players Not Living Up To 2015 Summer Contracts
8. Kosta Koufos
It’s kind of odd that the Sacramento Kings have committed four years and $33 million to a backup center who is probably the third-best center on the roster, isn’t it? But with DeMarcus Cousins obviously holding down the 5-spot and rookie Willie Cauley-Stein coming on strong, Koufos’ role on this team is diminishing.
On the season, Koufos is averaging 6.9 points and 5.7 rebounds in 20.0 minutes per game, but over the team’s last 19 games, he’s only reached the 20-minute threshold three times.
The NBA’s new salary cap obviously helps soften the blow of this overpriced deal, but Koufos has a -4.1 point differential and the Kings’ defense is 2.7 points better per 100 possessions with him off the floor. It feels like only a matter of time before this backup-caliber center finds a home elsewhere.
