Cleveland Cavaliers

Potential Trade: http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=hj5dyux

Portland Trail Blazers receive: Anderson Varejao, 2nd round pick
Cleveland Cavaliers receive: Gerald Henderson

This works as another illustration of the Blazers ability to absorb bigger contracts in order to acquire assets. Varejao’s contract is non-guaranteed in 2017-18 so the Blazers would only be committed to paying him through next season. The Cavaliers are way over the luxury tax so any cuts in salary means a lot less money that Dan Gilbert has to pay.

They could also seriously use another wing player so that they don’t have to give minutes to Richard Jefferson and James Jones. Henderson could also give the Cavs more possible lineup combinations with LeBron at the 4.

The glut of power forwards on the Cavs has been an issue for a while now with the majority of their cap space going towards a bunch of guys who are probably best utilized as power forwards.

To have a shot at beating the Warriors or Spurs, I think the Cavs are going to have to play LeBron at the 4 more often, even if that means sacrificing the minutes of Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson and Timofey Mozgov.

Gerald Henderson could give new head coach Tyronn Lue more possible lineup combinations where LeBron can play the 4 (or maybe even the 5). I think this could be another easy way to pick up another asset for Portland. The Blazers could make this deal if the Cavs just threw in some combination of second round picks and maybe Jared Cunningham.

I’m not going to say it’s impossible.
