Andre Drummond and the Detroit Pistons have been the most pleasant surprises in the Eastern Conference. Just one season removed from a 32-50 record, Detroit is 23-19 with Drummond is dominating on both ends of the floor.
Unfortunately, he’s further establishing himself as one of the worst free throw shooters in NBA history.
Being associated with Wilt Chamberlain is normally a good thing.
Until teams are no longer allowed to repeatedly intentionally foul—and I mean, repeatedly—Drummond’s free throw shooting will be a liability. He’s an outstanding player who spent the better part of the first half of the season in the Top 10, but has been falling because of an overwhelming weakness.
He had 13 points and 16 rebounds against the Chicago Bulls, but missed seven free throws in a 10-point loss. He tallied 11 points and 11 boards against the Memphis Grizzlies, but missed three of his four free throw attempts in a two-point loss.
You want Drummond to be on the floor as a fan of the NBA, but his dreadful shooting at the charity stripe makes that hard on Stan Van Gundy.
