NBA: 5 Worst Free Agent Signings Of 2015
4. Iman Shumpert, Cleveland Cavaliers
2015 contract: Four years, $40 million
2015-16 statistics: 7.2 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 1.5 APG, 24.6 MPG
Shumpert was shipped to Cleveland via trade to help with the bench production in order to make a push for the NBA Finals, which they did. He posted similar numbers throughout his 38 games with the Cavaliers last season as he is this season, which brings the question to the forefront of whether or not he is worth $10 million a season.
Besides being a high-energy perimeter defender, Shumpert has had little to offer the Cavaliers offensively. His three-point shooting, although it increased by 1.3 percent, is still an unimpressive 35.1 percent.
It’s understandable that the Cavaliers front office was going to do all it could to satisfy LeBron James in order to surround him with a championship-caliber roster, and Shumpert was one of those players that he wanted back, but the price was well above his worth. Shumpert’s RPM (Real Plus/Minus) this season is -.05, which ranks 23rd among shooting guards — behind Garrett Temple, Rodney Hood, and Tyler Johnson — three players that won’t make more than $2 million this season.
The Cavaliers were expecting an extremely high payroll this summer with the signing of James, Tristan Thompson and Kevin Love, but there was no reason to pile it on with $10 million thrown Shumpert’s way considering his production.
