3. New York Knicks

Record: 20-22

Untouchables: Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis

Tradable Assets: Arron Afflalo, SG; Langston Galloway, G; Robin Lopez, C

Prior to his shocking decision to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks, the New York Knicks made a run at Greg Monroe. Multiple reports surfaced that New York was Monroe’s preferred destination, but that vision never came to fruition.

It’s unclear whether or not the Knicks would still pull the trigger on a trade for Monroe, but it’s certainly worth exploring.

Robin Lopez doesn’t produce as Monroe does, but he’s been instrumental in the development of Kristaps Porzingis. His willingness to box out and allow Porzingis to grab rebounds has helped build the rookie’s confidence, albeit to the detriment of Lopez’s statistics.

One can’t help but wonder if Monroe and Porzingis could develop a similar chemistry.

Monroe would help the Knicks in a number of key areas, specifically his ability to anchor the low block as a back-to-the-basket scorer. Monroe is No. 9 in the NBA in points via post touches per game, while New York is No. 30 in points in the paint.

He may lack Lopez’s versatility and defensive prowess, but Monroe is one of the most efficient and productive low-post scorers in the NBA. That has immense value in the Triangle Offense.
