4. Washington Wizards

Record: 19-20

Untouchables: Bradley Beal, John Wall

Tradable Assets: Marcin Gortat, C; Nene Hilario, PF/C; Kelly Oubre Jr., G/F; Otto Porter Jr., SF

The Washington Wizards have the look of a team that’s one player away. John Wall is a borderline superstar at point guard, and Bradley Beal is a proven postseason performer at shooting guard, but there isn’t much by way of star-caliber consistency beyond that duo.

Greg Monroe could be the missing piece.

Monroe is a low-post maestro who can finish with both hands and dominate the offensive interior. He lacks the ideal level of consistency defensively, but Washington is flirting with mediocrity at an even 19-19.

Monroe is something of a gamble, but he’d create the desired low-high balance with Beal and Wall as a trio worth recognizing.

The Wizards have tradable assets, but it’s the type of situation where only one pairing can work without severely crippling the roster. Marcin Gortat and Nene Hilario are the most attractive veterans, and Kelly Oubre and Otto Porter join them as promising players, but it’s one from each grouping or Washington strips itself of its necessary depth.

As a former Georgetown Hoyas star, one can deduct that Monroe would be comfortable in the Washington, D.C. area.
