Teams Inquire About Kevin Martin

Since breaking out in 2006-07, Kevin Martin has been one of the better scorers in the NBA. He’s averaged at least 20.0 points in six different seasons, is one of the game’s all-time great free throw shooters, and has one of the most consistent strokes from beyond the arc.

With the youth movement in full effect in Minnesota, however, playing time has been tough to come by.

Martin’s never been much of a defender, which inevitably hurts his minutes, but he is an offensive asset. That has many across the NBA pondering whether or not he’d be a worthy addition to their respective rotations.

According to Michael A. Scotto of Sheridan Hoops, the Minnesota Timberwolves recently had exploratory talks with the Milwaukee Bucks about a potential trade surrounding Martin.

Unfortunately for those who hope to see Martin in a different uniform, a potential move is being held up by his 2016-17 player option.

That’s not entirely surprising.

Martin’s value is quite clear as a player who can score in an on-ball or off-ball capacity. He can use screens to get open, attack off the bounce, and has one of the most consistent jump shots in the NBA.

In 2014-15, Martin averaged 20.0 points on 39.3 percent shooting from beyond the arc. In 2015-16, however, sporadic playing time has disrupted his rhythm and thus prevented the 32-year-old from establishing how much he has left in the tank.

With a player option that would send $7,377,500 Martin’s way in 2016-17, teams have yet to determine whether or not the risk outweighs the reward.
