Brooklyn Nets Considering GM Options

Since Mikhail Prokhorov took over as owner in 2010, the Brooklyn Nets have been one of the NBA’s most severe underachievers. Despite Prokhorov’s willingness to go into the luxury tax, Billy King failed to deliver a championship-caliber roster.

In turn, Brooklyn made the surprising mid-season decision to reassign King from his perch as general manager. With King out, someone needs to come in.

A popular name surfacing is CSKA Moscow president Andrey Vatutin, who Aris Barkas of EuroHoops.net reported as Prokhorov’s top choice before King’s removal occurred.

"After keeping CSKA Moscow to the top of the VTB United league for years and among the Euroleague elite, Andrey Vatutin once more is tempted to leave Moscow for Brooklyn. Mikhail Prokhorov is the full owner of the Nets and according to Eurohoops sources, Vatutin is his top choice for the job of the general manager."

Another name has since surfaced.

According to Marc Sten and Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York, the Nets are considering Bryan Colangelo to be their next general manager.

"Former Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns general manager Bryan Colangelo is getting strong consideration for the Brooklyn Nets’ front office vacancy, according to league sources. Sources told ESPN.com that the two-time former NBA Executive of the Year is high on the Nets’ list of potential targets to succeed Billy King."

That’d be an interesting move, to say the very least.

Colangelo, 50, is known for orchestrating the formation of the iconic Phoenix Suns teams of the mid-to-late 2000s. Some of his signature moves included trading for Steve Nash and Boris Diaw, and drafting Shawn Marion and Amar’e Stoudemire.

Perhaps most applicably to Brooklyn’s situation, he won Executive of the Year for his masterful work in 2006-07. After the Raptors went 27-55 the year prior, Colangelo brought in nine new players to help Toronto secure its first division title in franchise history.

The question is, who could Colangelo or any other executive target as the Nets’ next head coach?
