The Best Bargain Contract On All 30 NBA Teams
New York Knicks: Arron Afflalo
2015-16 Salary: $8 million
2016-17 Salary: $8 million (player option)
Honorable Mention: Derrick Williams
Consider me among those who thought Arron Afflalo was washed after lackluster stints with the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers last year, but he’s been a pleasant surprise for the New York Knicks now that he’s healthy. After all, $8 million is more than worth it, if only to prevent Derek Fisher from starting Sasha Vujacic at shooting guard anymore!
The Knicks probably aren’t playoff bound, but Afflalo is part of an encouraging rebuild after the team won only 17 games last year. Averaging 13.8 points per game on .479/.366/.809 shooting splits, Triple-A has brought some much-needed help to a Knicks engine that’s seen its fair share of sputtering over the last few weeks.
The Knicks are 9-2 in games where Afflalo scores at least 15 points, and though he has a player option this summer, it’s hard to see him playing his way into a bigger extension elsewhere. It’s also worth noting he enjoys playing with former teammate Carmelo Anthony. Knicks fans have reason to feel good for the first time in years, which leads me to believe Afflalo will continue to lend great value to New York on a manageable salary through 2016-17.
