Three-point shooting was the main story for North Carolina before the season, but it was whether or not they would be able to hit them on offense, not whether or not they’d be able to prevent their opponent from hitting them.
Prior to their game against Clemson, the Tar Heels ranked 319th (!!!) in the nation in three-point defense with opponents shooting 38.2 percent against them. There are less than five major conference teams that rank lower than UNC in this category.
But who’s to blame for this?
According to Synergy, everybody but one guy. Opponents are shooting just 29 percent on threes against Marcus Paige but 42 percent against Joel Berry, 53 percent against Nate Britt, 40 percent against Justin Jackson and 40 percent against Theo Pinson.
This has to improve for Carolina to have any sort of chance of winning it all this year, which is the ultimate goal for this team. Of course, playing in the ACC, there will be plenty of opportunity to fix it with offensively gifted teams such as Duke, Notre Dame and Louisville on the slate.
