The NBA’s 50 Greatest Duos Of All-Time
By Duncan Smith
7. Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars, Detroit Pistons
Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars of the Detroit Pistons comprised the starting backcourt of one of the most infamous teams in NBA history– the Bad Boys.
Those Bad Boys helped put the Detroit Pistons on the map, revitalizing a franchise that had never been especially competitive before their arrival on the scene.
Thomas and Dumars played together for the Pistons from 1985-86, when Dumars was drafted by the Pistons, until 1993-94, when Thomas retired.
Over the course of those years, the Pistons went 372-306 (let’s pretend the final 20-62 season didn’t happen in 1993-94, when Thomas was no longer himself after suffering multiple injuries and retired after tearing his Achilles) and went to three straight NBA Finals between 1988 and 1990, winning two.
Thomas went on to coach the Indiana Pacers, and was later an executive with the Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks. Dumars became the president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons and led them to the 2003-04 NBA championship.
