The NBA’s 50 Greatest Duos Of All-Time
By Duncan Smith
13. John Stockton and Karl Malone, Utah Jazz
Without a doubt, the longest tenured duo of any note was John Stockton and Karl Malone for the Utah Jazz, who played together through the mid-1980s and all of the 1990s, and even into the 2000s.
In the incredible 18 years Stockton and Malone shared the court in Utah, the Jazz went 915-522, and never won fewer than the 42 games they won in their first season together in 1985-86 (other than the shortened 1998-99 season where they went 37-13).
In spite of their regular season dominance, they were never able to take the Jazz to the promised land and deliver a championship. Between 1991 and 1998, they lost in the Western Conference Finals three times, and they ran into Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in back-to-back years in the NBA Finals. We all know how that worked out for the Jazz.
Over the course of their careers together, Stockton averaged 13.1 points and 10.5 assists per game, and he led the NBA in assists for nine straight years between 1987 and 1996, averaging an incredible 13.1 per game over that stretch.
Malone added 25.4 points and 10.2 rebounds, and will forever be remembered as one of the best big men the NBA has ever seen.
