16. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson, Milwaukee Bucks

Without a doubt, the best move the Milwaukee Bucks ever made as a franchise was selecting Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then known as Lew Alcindor, as he didn’t change his name until after the Bucks won the 1971 championship) with the first overall pick in the 1969 NBA Draft. Perhaps the second best move was to bring on the veteran presence of Oscar Robertson, one of the best to ever play the game.

In Kareem’s rookie season, he led the Bucks to a 56-26 record, a 29-game improvement over the previous season. When Robertson came on board, the Bucks made their big leap.

The young Kareem and the experienced Robertson jelled immediately, leading the Bucks to a 66-16 record and an NBA championship in just their first season together in 1970-71, and returned to the finals in 1973-74, Robertson’s final season.

This dynamic duo led the Bucks to a tremendous 248-80 record and a winning percentage of 75.6 percent. Not a bad welcome to the NBA for what was then an expansion franchise.
