The NBA’s 50 Greatest Duos Of All-Time
By Duncan Smith
18. Tim Duncan and David Robinson, San Antonio Spurs
When Tim Duncan was drafted first overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 1997, one of the greatest dynasties in professional sports histories was born. His integration with David Robinson created the first iteration of it, creating the mighty Twin Towers duo.
The year the Spurs tanked to get Duncan in the 1997 draft, they went 20-62. In Duncan’s rookie season, the Spurs went 56-26, and in his sophomore season the Spurs won their first NBA championship.
The duo played together until Robinson retired in 2002-03, over which time the Spurs went 322-138, good for a tremendous winning percentage of 70 percent.
The two big men left virtually no rebounds uncollected, and destroyed opponents in the paint. Between 1997-98 and 2002-03, Duncan averaged 22.9 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, and Robinson chipped in 15.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
