The NBA’s 50 Greatest Duos Of All-Time
By Duncan Smith
22. David Robinson and Avery Johnson, San Antonio Spurs
Avery Johnson did some bouncing around the NBA before finding a home with the San Antonio Spurs and David Robinson. He played with the Seattle SuperSonics, the Denver Nuggets, the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets (and had a short stint with the Spurs in the middle) before settling down for good in San Antonio.
The Little General and the Admiral, as Johnson and Robinson were known respectively, helped lead the Spurs into the new millennium alongside young superstar big man Tim Duncan. The Spurs had a record of 463-243 between 1994-95 and 2002-03 when Johnson and Robinson were together, good for a 65.3 winning percentage, and they won two NBA championships, in 1997-98 and 2002-03.
While Tim Duncan was largely a finished product when he was drafted by the Spurs out of Wake Forest in 1997, it’s possible that his career and his psychological makeup and professional approach may have developed differently without the tutelage of David Robinson and Avery Johnson in his formative years in the NBA.
