3. Controlling The Pace

Getting to the foul line so many times obviously slows down the game, but the Toronto Raptors make a point of controlling the tempo in as many ways as they can. Dwane Casey’s squad plays at the sixth slowest pace in the NBA, and their 10.9 fast break points per game — 23rd in the NBA — shows they don’t often try to get out in transition.

The Raptors are content to grind out possessions on offense, which usually involves Lowry or DeRozan trying to create something one-on-one off the dribble. Toronto attempts the second most field goals per game with four seconds or less on the shot clock, but winning the turnover battle is another reason behind the Raptors’ ability to dictate the tempo.

Toronto averages 18.0 points per game off opponent turnovers (10th most in the league) and are giving up just 14.9 points per game off their own turnovers (fifth).

Casey’s squad is regularly outscored in transition, but by holding the ball, winning the turnover battle, getting to the foul line and relying on their top-10 defense for stops, the Raptors have usually been able to play at a pace they’re comfortable with.
