How The Rockets Fit In

From the Rockets’ perspective, Daryl Morey’s alleged interest in Keef feels a lot like searching for a lifeline. Houston has wildly fallen short of expectations so far this season at 10-11, and firing head coach Kevin McHale has done little to alter their fortunes.

However, the Rockets have now won five of their last six games to climb into the eighth playoff spot in the West. One 5-1 stretch doesn’t change everything, but it’s a little curious Morey would swing for the fences like this right when his team looks like it’s starting to figure things out.

It’s especially dumbfounding that a team with chemistry problems is looking to Markieff Morris as a potential savior. How many personalities can that locker room take when it already has James Harden, Dwight Howard and Ty Lawson?

However, it’s worth pointing out that Keef could likely spread the floor as a stretch-4 at a fraction of the cost it’d take to re-sign Terrence Jones or Donatas Motiejunas next summer. Jones is making 38.7 percent of his threes and D-Mo is finally back, but with both injury-prone bigs heading for free agency, having a more long-term option locked in might be Houston’s preference.

In any case, if the Rockets are interested, exactly no one would be surprised to see the Suns pull the trigger on a deals as soon as possible. Keef was not exactly beloved in Phoenix back when he was still the team’s second best player, so now that he’s been benched, he’s really running short on admirers.

The question is, what would be the bounty in a potential Markieff Morris swap?
