Detroit Pistons: Evaluating Andre Drummond’s Development
Dominant Rebounding
When all else fails, Drummond is better than any other player in the NBA at crashing the offensive glass. That isn’t hyperbole or unfounded praise, but instead an acknowledgment of how overwhelmed teams have been against Drummond.
Drummond isn’t just No. 1 in offensive rebounding; he’s No. 1 by a massive margin.
DeAndre Jordan is No. 2 in the NBA with 60 offensive rebounds—a full 46 less than Drummond’s 106. Those numbers aren’t skewed in any manner, as they’ve been recorded in the same number of games played.
According to Basketball-Reference.com, Drummond’s current average of 5.9 offensive rebounds have been maintained over the course of a full season by just three players in NBA history: Moses Malone, Dennis Rodman and Jayson Williams.
That’s helped Drummond pull away from the competition with a number of 20-20 performances.
There isn’t an adjective strong enough to describe that type of dominance.
Overall, Drummond’s 16.9 rebounds per game put him a full 3.8 ahead of Jordan for No. 1 in the NBA. He’s grabbed 24 more rebounds than Jordan, and that remains true after Jordan recorded 24 rebounds on November 30.
If only on the strength of his rebounding, Drummond can dominate the opposition.
