The Future

When the Spurs signed LaMarcus Aldridge this summer, he was heralded as Tim Duncan’s successor by the outside world. But even though landing the former Portland Trail Blazers superstar was a coup for San Antonio, everyone down by the Riverwalk knew the truth: Just because he plays the same position as Duncan doesn’t mean he’s the future of this franchise.

That would be Kawhi Leonard, the 24-year-old babyfaced assassin who hardly ever changes his facial expression and whose arrival will usher in a new era of Spurs basketball.

Adding Aldridge makes the Spurs extremely dangerous and once he gets comfortable with his new teammates, there’s no question that he’ll be back on everyone’s radars as one of the best power forwards in the NBA.

But with Aldridge already being 30 years old, he probably won’t be playing at an elite level by the end of his four-year contract. Leonard, on the other hand, still hasn’t even approached his prime. The San Antonio Spurs are as dangerous as ever, and the biggest reason is that Kawhi Leonard looks more than ready to make the leap in 2015-16.
