The Verdict

As of right now, the pecking order for the backup shooting guard position feels like Weems, then Booker, then Goodwin. It’s a long season, and though fans will be drooling at the prospect of youngsters like Booker and Goodwin contributing to a playoff-hopeful team, the truth is that it just might not happen right away.

However, Weems has the lowest ceiling of the three. If he’s unable to spread the floor from three-point range, much like we saw in the preseason, the only hope he has of maintaining minutes over the full season is by playing superb defense and being T.J. Warren-like with his off-the-ball movement.

Booker figures to get a few looks at extended playing time, which will be pretty exciting for the home fans since you could hear the crowd go deathly silent every time he got an open look at a three in anticipation of hearing that ball go through the net.

He may not be much more than a spot-up shooter in his first season, but the Suns are optimistic it won’t be long until he starts developing into one heck of an offensive weapon. With the long-term in mind, Booker is the most valuable of the three, so giving him minutes — provided he’s ready — could be beneficial over the long run AND make the Suns a better team in 2015-16.

Goodwin has a lot to prove heading into this third season, especially when being directly compared to a guy like Booker, who can already spread the floor. The Suns aimed to improve their perimeter shooting with their offseason moves, so Goodwin will have to really make the most of his opportunities off the bench or risk another year of being disappointingly relegated to bench duty.
