Predictions

Following such a disappointing title defense, this could be the year that sees the San Antonio Spurs back in the Finals. There are concerns about locker room chemistry and how a bonafide one-on-one scorer like Aldridge will mesh with San Antonio’s team-oriented offense, but there’s too much talent and brainpower here to worry about the Spurs. They’ll figure this out.

  • The David West addition helps San Antonio make up a lot of what they lost in terms of depth this summer, but it is worth wondering how much firepower the Spurs will be packing from three-point territory. Still, with Aldridge onboard, Danny Green back and another year of development for Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs are the Warriors’ biggest obstacle to repeating in 2015-16.

A seven-game series between those teams could very well come down to home-court advantage, which is why developing that chemistry as quickly as possible is so important. Having to go into Oracle Arena and beat the defending champs there is a brutal proposition, even for a team as stacked and experienced as the Spurs.

San Antonio has no reason to be afraid of anyone, but there are no guarantees in a conference with five legitimate title contenders. Leonard will finally have his breakthrough season to counter Parker’s continued regression, but the Spurs should at least make the conference finals if everyone stays healthy. If not, it will be injuries or a premature matchup with another contender that does them in.

If the Spurs are able to represent the West in the 2016 NBA Finals, however, Tim Duncan could very easily win his sixth championship.
