Marcelo Huertas: The Veteran The Los Angeles Lakers Need?

Looking for the veteran who is going to show D’Angelo Russell how to play point guard professionally? Well, Google “Marcelo Huertas” and you might just have your answer.

Huertas won’t be able to speak about how to play the NBA game – he’s technically a rookie – but he’s been a professional for more than 10 years, most recently in Spain’s top-tier Liga ACB. At age 32, Huertas should bring a steady hand to the Lakers’ backcourt.

Of course, that assumes he makes the team, which isn’t a lock. Per Basketball Insiders’ Eric Pincus, Huertas’ contract is not guaranteed. Still, he is the only true backup at point guard, which could be an indication about the team’s plans for him.

It will be interesting to watch Huertas in the preseason, but he should fit in right away in the pick-and-roll. According to everything I’ve read or watched on him, he is a pass-first, team-oriented type of point guard; exactly the guy who D’Angelo Russell should be learning from.

Again, I would expect the Lakers to keep the guy on the roster given what he can bring to the table, but keep tabs on him during the preseason. Ultimately, he should see run as Russell’s backup this season.
