With training camp and the start of the season coming up (thank goodness), NBA teams are now finalizing their staffs and their early rosters. Atlanta Hawks President of Basketball Operations/Head Coach Mike Budenholzer formally announced several staff moves today.

Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution already reported at least one of these additions before today’s announcement. Former NBA player Malik Rose was hired as the Hawks’ Manager of Basketball Operations. Rose played 13 seasons in the NBA for four teams, and won two championships with the San Antonio Spurs. Rose has never held a front office position before, and worked in broadcasting for the NBA and the D-League after his retirement.

Michael Blackstone was named the team’s Assistant General Manager. Blackstone was the Executive Director of Basketball Operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2010-2013. Before taking this job with Atlanta he was working at the Shapiro Negotiations Institute in Baltimore.

John Treloar was hired as the Director of Player Personnel, a position that he previously held for the Phoenix Suns. Treloar has previously served as an NCAA assistant coach for Indiana University and Louisiana State, as well as a head coach of the Erie BayHawks of the NBA D-League.

Jeff Peterson, a former collegiate player at Florida State, as been promoted to Director of Scouting. He joined the Hawks as a seasonal assistant in 2012, and has been a Coordinator of Basketball Operations and a Scout with the franchise before receiving these promotions. A few other staffing changes were mentioned in the Hawks official press release.

Budenholzer commented on the staff moves saying “Much like building our team on the floor, we seek to add and retain high-character individuals who work well as a group at every level of our basketball operations department.”

While it certainly isn’t likely that we will hear these names very often, this does indicate the development of Budenholzer as the head of the organization. He is beginning to develop his own staff and his own inner circle. He’s certainly proven his basketball savvy, so it’s a safe bet these hires will be good for the team.
