Warriors To Add Steve Nash As Part-Time Consultant
It’s been a pretty good summer for the defending champs. They re-signed Draymond Green to a steal of a contract, they drafted a high upside pick in Kevon Looney, who can flourish in a winning environment once he gets healthy, and they did right by David Lee (and a massive luxury tax bill) by trading him to the Boston Celtics.
With the impending acquisition of two-time MVP Steve Nash as a part-time player development consultant, the Golden State Warriors simply have the Midas touch.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Warriors are in advanced talks with Nash to bring him on as part-time player development consultant, where he’ll tutor Golden State’s guards every now and then.
For reigning MVP Stephen Curry and All-Star Splash Brother Klay Thompson, the Dubs’ guards don’t seem to be in need of mentoring, but when you have an opportunity to add one of the NBA’s greatest point guards and shooters of all time — even in a part-time role — you don’t think twice about doing it.

According to Stein, head coach Steve Kerr and team president Rick Welts have been aggressively pursuing Nash to join the championship organization for some time now. Kerr, Welts and current Warriors player development coach Bruce Fraser all worked closely with Nash during the prime of his career with the Phoenix Suns.
Nash has repeatedly stressed the importance of being close to his kids, so this is really a no-brainer. While out with a back injury last season, Nash filled a similar role with Jordan Clarkson and the Los Angeles Lakers, and has also worked out with Jeremy Lin, Dante Exum, Kemba Walker and C.J. McCollum, per Stein.
Back in March, ESPN also reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers were trying to coax Nash away from retirement to fill a spot-point guard role on a championship contender. As recently as June, the Dallas Mavericks were trying to reunite Nash with Dirk Nowitzki in a similar role, but Nash was adamant about playing for the Lakers if he were to return as a player.
Since retiring, Nash wasn’t planning on going into coaching, but since this is a part-time role and a perfect culture fit for a player of his talents, joining the Golden State Warriors is a win-win for everyone involved.
Well, maybe not for the Phoenix Suns, who have two starting-caliber point guards that could really use Nash’s perspective when it comes to playmaking and shooting, but since Nash has more ties to Warriors personnel than he does to current Suns executives, the whole thing makes sense.
As the Western Conference continues to get more and more top-heavy, the Warriors will have a tough task ahead of them to repeat as NBA champions. But even in a part-time role, the prospect of teaming one of the greatest point guards and shooters in league history with the Splash Brothers is a formidable one that will only help the Dubs on their quest in 2015-16.
