Quick Thoughts

The Grizzlies lost a little bit of their depth with the free agency departures of Nick Calathes, Jon Leuer and Kosta Koufos, but only Koufos was a loss that needed to be mitigated this offseason. Enter Brandan Wright, one of the best value plays of the offseason, who signed on for three years and $18 million — a major bargain considering his efficiency and the NBA’s rising cap.

More from Memphis Grizzlies

Wright was an excellent pickup, but so was Matt Barnes, who might bring the 3-and-D element that the Grizzlies were hoping Jeff Green would bring. Memphis’ Achilles heel has been perimeter shooting for years, so even Barnes’ 36.2 percent shooting from distance last season will be a welcome addition.

Even better, Barnes brings his own personal brand of grit-n-grind with the type of renowned bad boy attitude that will only strengthen Memphis’ stout, tough defense.

Of course, none of this happens without Marc Gasol re-signing to remain in the only city he’s ever called home as an NBA player. Had Big Spain sought greener pastures, Memphis might have thought twice about blowing it up. Instead, they’re bringing the whole gang back for another hard-fought, improbable run for the Larry O’Brien trophy.
