The Draft

To maximize their financial flexibility this summer, the Cleveland Cavaliers traded out of the first round of the 2015 NBA Draft, shipping their 24th overall pick (Tyus Jones) to the Minnesota Timberwolves for the rights to Cedi Osman (No. 31) and Rakeem Christmas (No. 36). With their 53rd overall pick, the Cavs also added Sir Dominic Pointer.

Osman is a 6’8″ international player who’s a great playmaker on the wing. He always plays with high energy and doesn’t seem to ever take plays off, but the Cavs will wait at least two years to sign him to a deal.

Pointer, a 6’5″ wing from St. John’s, averaged 5.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 18.4 minutes per game during NBA Summer League play. He has not signed a contract with the Cavaliers yet either, and his status on the roster is in doubt after the Cavaliers signed 2008 second round pick Sasha Kaun to a two-year deal — the Cavs’ most recent transaction of the summer.

With Osman being a draft-and-stash and Pointer unlikely to ever suit up for the Cavaliers, Cleveland really didn’t add anything in this year’s draft. That’s acceptable for a team contending for a title as currently constructed, but we can’t really give them anything more than a simple passing grade here.
