His Name Is Jonas

On the list of notable extensions for NBA players named Jonas this summer, Jonas Jerebko was sitting proudly atop the leaderboard until Jonas Valanciunas‘ four-year, $64 million deal yesterday. Even so, Jerebko’s two-year, $10 million extension is pretty good value for a team that’s basically bringing back the same roster (only with more youth) for next season.

Jerebko’s deal is basically salary filler in a potential trade that Ainge will be sniffing out for the next few months. Between his good work ethic and his three-point shooting ability (38.6 percent from long range last season), Jerebko is another useful placeholder until the Celtics can find the right player to build around.

However, even if Jerebko holds no advantage over guys like Jared Sullinger, Tyler Zeller or Kelly Olynyk in the rotation next season, Boston will be paying him a meager salary and like Johnson, the second year of his deal isn’t guaranteed anyway.
