Oct. 28 vs. Minnesota Timberwolves: The Opener

Out of context, a basketball game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers wouldn’t seem to be a huge draw outside of their respective fan bases. But, man, does this game have a ton to offer.

Above all else, this game falls on the second day of the regular season. At that point, we are all basketball starved to the point of desperation. Opening night may satisfy the appetite of the casual fan, but for the basketball junkies, it only stokes the fire and the need for more. This game, a nationally televised nightcap, will be the perfect ending to a night filled with NBA hoops.

The intrigue on the court starts with a battle of two of the most promising young foundations in the Western Conference. The Lakers will trot out Jordan Clarkson, D’Angelo Russell, and Julius Randle together for the first time, and they will be opposed by Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Adding more to that aspect of the game, the opening game of the season will pit the first-overall pick (Towns) against second-overall pick (Russell).

Don’t care about the youth movement? This game still has something for you: Kobe Bryant versus Kevin Garnett.

Sure, it’s not the headliner it would have been seven years ago, but it’s the only time all season that you’ll have a near-guaranteed shot to see these two legends battle it out in a game that means something. It is a long way from the NBA Finals battles this duo have shared, but if you love basketball, there is nothing like seeing two of the game’s greatest share the same court.

And, perhaps most importantly, one of these teams is going to start 1-0. Given the incompetency of both squads last season, that’s a big deal.
