Dallas Mavericks: Grading The Offseason
Overall
The Mavs didn’t earn an individual grade lower than a C- here, and yet their overall grade for the offseason is a D. What gives? Well, when you factor in what the Mavericks failed to get done this summer and where they’re headed in 2015-16, it’s hard to be optimistic about the moves they actually did pull off.
All things considered, the Mavs regrouped quickly and about as well as could be expected when DeAndre Jordan’s indecision left them hanging. It’s not even Dallas’ fault that their offseason turned out to be a failure either. It was really just an unfortunate circumstance that transformed the Mavericks from a surefire playoff team into a likely lottery-bound group.

The Smoking Cuban
Unfortunately, Dallas’ offseason leaves them right in the middle of NBA no man’s land: probably not good enough to make the playoffs but not bad enough to earn a top draft pick. Even worse, the Mavericks will send their first round draft pick to the Boston Celtics if it doesn’t fall in the top seven (from that ill-fated Rajon Rondo trade).
That gives Dallas every reason to tank the 2015-16 season away, but Cuban’s loyalty to keeping the team as competitive as possible for Dirk’s sake means the Mavs will probably miss out on the playoffs AND lose their first round pick next summer.
The Deron Williams’ signing is about three years and three ankle procedures too late, Matthews is an overpaid proposition who may never be the same after his Achilles tear and a core of D-Will, Matthews, Parsons, Dirk, Zaza and JaVale McGee leaves the team EXTREMELY prone to injury problems. That’s not a good path to success, over the short-term or the long-term.
After years of punting on the draft and seeking out useful quick fixes, the Mavs are finally set to pay the price. It took a complete 180 from DeAndre Jordan for it to happen, and Dallas’ summer of recovery was about as good as it could’ve been, but all in all this offseason was a major disappointment for Mark Cuban and company.
