Dallas Mavericks: Grading The Offseason
Bringing Back Barea
Like Matthews, J.J. Barea was a prime beneficiary of DeAndre Jordan backing out of his deal with the Mavs. After originally agreeing to a two-year, $5.7 million deal, Barea upgraded to a relatively humongous four-year, $16 million deal.
At age 31, it’s a little ridiculous the Mavs gave a backup point guard that much money and that many years, even after striking out on DeAndre Jordan. Barea only has so many good years left, and this deal eats further into Dallas’ cap room next summer when the Mavs will take another swing at landing a big-name free agent.
Last season, Barea averaged 7.5 points in 17.7 minutes per game in his return to Dallas, stepping those numbers up to 11.8 points in 30.8 minutes per game during the playoffs. He knows Rick Carlisle’s system and is a serviceable backup that the fans enjoy watching. But this is a pretty bad overpay, and it’s one that makes the loss of DeAndre Jordan that much more cringeworthy.
