Toronto Raptors: Grading The Offseason
Signing Scola
Luis Scola doesn’t really fit in with the consistent theme of bolstering the defense, but last year with the Indiana Pacers, he was fairly efficient at the one thing he’s still good for at age 35: putting up points off the bench.
In 20.5 minutes per game, Scola averaged 9.4 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 46.7 percent from the floor. He’s not as quick as he once was, but Scola’s game has aged well, as he’s still a smart passer and crafty with his scoop shots in the post. He’s a major liability on the defensive end, but the Raptors did a good job elsewhere on that front to be able to afford a liability on that end.
After losing Amir Johnson, it never hurts to have a little more frontcourt depth and Scola certainly isn’t worthless. This move won’t be the difference between winning the East and falling short again, but a one-year, $3 million deal is a small price to pay for that kind of extra depth.
