Re-Signing McDaniels

With a three-year, $10 million extension, the Houston Rockets agreed to terms with their restricted free agent K.J. McDaniels, largely based on his potential. After acquiring him in a trade with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Rockets played him a grand total of 33 minutes last season.

In 52 games with the Sixers, McDaniels averaged 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 25.4 minutes per game. He showed the potential to become one of the best shot-blockers in the NBA for his position, he’s only 22 years old and though there are notable flaws in his game, the Rockets chose to invest in his future.

To find his role on this Rockets team, McDaniels will need to improve his three-point shooting after only making 29.3 percent of his 2.8 three-pointers per game in Philly. But he’s athletic enough to be a plus on the defensive end in the future, so paying this minuscule amount is worth the risk that comes with any young player’s bust potential.
