Adding Thornton

The Rockets had plenty of guards before this move, but they didn’t exactly have playmakers in the backcourt outside of James Harden. By signing Marcus Thornton, Houston added a guy who can make plays, even if they’re usually only for himself.

On a one-year, veteran minimum deal, the Rockets aren’t taking much of a risk here. If Thornton pans out, Houston will have instant offensive coming off the bench and decent insurance for Jason Terry if his body starts breaking down at age 37.

Thornton’s offense has seen better days. He averaged a career low 7.9 points per game last season and couldn’t even crack the rotation for the Phoenix Suns. But he’s a career 36.2 percent shooter from three-point range and he’s relatively effective in the pick-and-roll. For that price, this is a bargain deal that could prove to be useful down the road.
