Gee, What A Nice Addition

Alonzo Gee is not a legitimate 3-and-D player. To qualify for that designation, you kind of have to make more than 13 pointers in 54 games, as Gee did last year with the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers. But signing him to a two-year, $2.75 million deal isn’t much of a risk for a team looking for a long-term option at small forward.

Gee is a career 33.2 percent shooter from three-point range and averaged a meager 4.5 points in 12.3 minutes per game last year. After using most of their mid-level exception on Cunningham, the Pelicans used the rest of it on Gee.

But he’s a solid defender who could help the Pelicans improve on that end of the floor if he’s able to crack the rotation. He’ll really need to work on becoming a consistent three-point threat for that to happen, which will be a challenge for a 28-year-old who hasn’t found the right fit so far in his six-year career. But for a reasonable price, Gee brings respectable depth and wing defense.
