Sacramento Kings: Grading The Offseason
Trading McCallum
On the one hand, this backup point guard is only 24 years old and has only played in two seasons. As a rookie, Ray McCallum shot 37.3 percent from three-point range and it feels all too familiar for the Kings to give up on a young player before he ever gets the chance to really prove himself.
But that perception is inaccurate here. The Kings were more than likely considering dropping him before his 2015-16 salary became guaranteed, so trading him to the San Antonio Spurs for a future second-round pick is preferable to waiving him for nothing.
With Rondo and Darren Collison on the roster, there’d be limited opportunity for McCallum anyway. Sadly, even the moves that make sense for the Kings this summer are hard to get too excited about.
