New York Knicks: Grading The Offseason
Overall
Perhaps this is a harsh score considering NY’s individual moves weren’t bad ones. The goal of the offseason is to improve heading into the next NBA cycle, and the Knicks did that by bringing in Afflalo, Lopez, Williams and two solid rookies. But since Jackson also missed out on every major free agent this summer — including one that seemed like a done deal at the beginning of the summer in Greg Monroe — we have to take off some points for that.

Monroe wouldn’t have changed the franchise overnight, but he would’ve been a nice fit in the Triangle and he and Carmelo Anthony could have formed a great offensive frontcourt. At 25 years old, Monroe wouldn’t have been your typical shortsighted free agency acquisition either, as he could’ve been a Knicks building block post-Melo.
But if we’re judging the Knicks solely by the moves they did make, rather than the ones they failed to make, New York admittedly improved this season. Jackson also deserves credit for not handing out any bad contracts and taking a more long-term approach through the draft.
This wasn’t the summer most Knicks fans wanted. But they did get better, even if this still isn’t a playoff team. They should be penalized for missing out on the kind of star acquisitions Jackson needed to truly turn this franchise around, but based on what was available, the Knicks could’ve done much worse.
