Milwaukee Bucks: Grading The Offseason
Trading For Greivis Vasquez
In the first draft-day trade of 2015, the Bucks sent a 2017 first round draft pick (via the Los Angeles Clippers) and the 46th pick in the draft to the Toronto Raptors for backup point guard Greivis Vasquez. There are obvious pros and cons to a deal such as this.
On the plus side, Vasquez is a capable backup who should thrive playing under Kidd. He averaged 9.5 points and 3.7 assists per game in Toronto last season, shooting nearly 38 percent from three-point territory. With Tyler Ennis and Jerryd Bayless already on the roster, Vasquez’s size (6’6″) and three-point shooting will allow him to play off the ball as well.
However, trading a first rounder for Vasquez doesn’t seem like a great use of that Clippers pick, especially since General Greivis is only on the books for the 2015-16 season. That pick from Lob City is lottery-protected through 2019, and since the Clippers are still pretty darn good, that pick figures to be somewhere in the 20s when it is conveyed.
But that pick on a rookie salary for four years might wind up being more valuable than what Vasquez has to offer for one season. At 28 years old, the Bucks might not want to overpay for his services after this year with the way the salary cap is rising. Vasquez figures to be a solid pickup, but not for that kind of price tag with Ennis and Bayless still around.
