Larry Nance … is a walking highlight reel, but needs some seasoning.

If you are a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and you don’t like Larry Nance Jr. yet, it’s OK. But, I must warn you, eventually you will join the already multiplying ranks of those who support the Lakers’ choice at No. 27 overall.

That is because Nance looks like he is going to become an energy big off the bench that creeps into the SportsCenter Top 10 on occasion. He already did that at Wyoming, and he made his mark in Summer League with a forceful block on Jahlil Okafor.

The dunks, blocks, and hustle plays will provide a spark for future editions of the Lakers, but for that to happen Nance will need to earn playing time. He didn’t look ready for anything but spot minutes in summer league.

Nance was given open mid-range jumpers and had the opportunity to finish at the rim; both were endeavors that ended in disappointment. In order to push Ryan Kelly, Brandon Bass, and even Tarik Black for minutes, he will need to stick his open opportunities. Finishing at the rim is a must for any player on the roster, especially one with as much bounce as Larry Nance Jr.

Heading into training camp, Nance’s jump shot will be the thing to watch. If he can make the most of his opportunities, he will have the chance to become an impact role player much sooner than later. Odds are, at least right now, that his highlight reel will feature mostly D-League teams in 2015-16.
