Los Angeles Clippers: Grading The Offseason
Adding Wesley Johnson
Like Cole Aldrich, Wesley Johnson won’t move the needle too far for a lot of fans. But also like Aldrich, Johnson represents another smart acquisition for the veteran’s minimum.
As a 3-and-D addition, Wesley brings further bench depth to a team that badly needed it in the playoffs last season. Last season for the Lakers, the former No. 4 pick in the 2010 NBA Draft averaged 9.9 points per game on 35.1 percent shooting from three-point range. With Barnes gone, the Clippers will be more than happy to have even average three-point shooting off the bench.
Johnson has mostly been a disappointment during his NBA career. He’s already 28 years old, but he can play decent defense and should thrive off the bench for a contender in a limited role where he’s not asked to do too much. GM Doc Rivers wasn’t lying about his commitment to giving his starting five some adequate firepower off the bench, and Wes Johnson is yet another example of that.
