Atlanta Hawks: Comprehensive Grades For The Offseason
Draft Day Moves
Essentially the Hawks trade the 15th pick for two second rounders and Tim Hardaway Jr. This move was puzzling to some, especially because the the player the Hawks chose 15th. Before trading the pick, that pick was Kelly Oubre. Oubre is the type of player the Hawks need, and has impressed in Summer League so far.

Tim Hardaway Jr., on the other hand, is not the kind of player one might expect to see on the Hawks. He’s an isolation scorer who plays no defense whatsoever, and he didn’t have a good season as a sophomore, where he shot only 39 percent from the floor. Not the kind of figure you’d like to see from your heat check scorer off the bench.
I still take the same uncertain stance I took when I wrote about the deal after the draft. On the one hand, the Hawks needed some shooting from the bench, and Hardaway has a better chance of being successful in that role on a team that plays outside of the D-League. Oh wait, he played for the New York Knicks last season. My bad.
On the other hand, there were players on the draft board, specifically Oubre, who could have filled greater needs for Atlanta. Meanwhile, Hardaway will compete for minutes with Kent Bazemore, a decent defender who doesn’t generate much in the scoring department.
I knocked the grade down a bit from my previous analysis because, after thinking about it, being in a situation where you have to choose between zero offense and zero defense is not ideal. The Hawks could have set up Oubre in a place where he could take some time to become a good offensive player at the pro level while also being in a system that could get him shots and reps without asking him to do too much. That just seems somewhat better than what the Hawks actually did.
