Better Defense

An overview of Masai Ujiri’s moves during the offseason will indicate that defense was a priority for him. The signings of Cory Joseph, Bismack Biyombo, and Carroll will help bolster the porous Raptors’ defense, which was ranked 23rd last season. A tighter defense will help take the pressure away from the offense to score, which should allow them to win more games.

Among all the free agents, Carroll was arguably the best perimeter defender. Even if his style of play doesn’t end up fitting the Raptors, Carroll will still be able to impact games with his defensive presence.

Behind the three-point line, he limited his opponents to 32.7 percent. He was especially efficient with shots behind the break, holding opponents to 31.5 percent shooting there. Adding Carroll will give the Raptors excellent defensive coverage, especially against teams with marquee players.
