Jul. 8, 2015 will go down as one of the craziest and most entertaining days in NBA free agency history, all the way up until midnight of Jul. 9, but it will defiantly be a day to forget for the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks thought they had free agent DeAndre Jordan on their squad after he agreed to accept a four-year max contract offer, but in the end, after the recruiting efforts from many of the Los Angeles Clippers’ players and organization, Jordan decided to take back his agreement and sign with the Clippers.

So now the Mavericks are without a franchise center, and the team has just lost their star scorer in Monta Ellis earlier in free agency to the Indiana Pacers. Many fans and teams are wondering what direction owner Mark Cuban will go in now.

Option 1: Spend

It is hard to believe that the Mavs are going to try and tank next season because that does not seem to be in the nature of the franchise, and now with max cap room, the Mavs could go out and try an snag some other free agents. The Mavs definitely have the money to sign a high-level free agent, and the team is in need of a point guard, and a starting center.

Ty Lawson is a name that could come up in trade talks because he is more than likely on his way out in Denver, and he would be a good fit on the Mavs because he is a proven player with playoff experience. There’s little more than speculation at this point, but the Mavs have the cap flexibility to do a lot; they just need to find players and teams that want to ship out some players.

Even if the Mavs land a solid point guard and a decent center, the team still might not make the playoffs, which is a little crazy to think about because teams like Utah, New Orleans and Phoenix are all trending up in an already brutal Western Conference.

Option 2: Tank

Dallas has to seriously consider throwing away next season after losing Jordan because the team’s roster is not built to win a championship, and it is barley built to make it to the playoffs as of right now. The Mavs do not have their first round pick next year, due to the Rajon Rondo trade, unless the team finishes top-seven in the lottery, which is why the Mavs might want to really consider tanking.

  • Dirk Nowitzki is still a wonderful player, but he is starting to show signs of old age. Wesley Matthews is a terrific defender and shooter, but no one knows if he will be able to rebound from his devastating Achilles injury from last season, and the team lacks a solid starting point guard and big man right now.

The only thing the Mavs have going for them is that Chandler Parsons is still young and promising, and the team just drafted Justin Anderson who has the potential to be a solid shooting guard in the NBA. But other than that, the future is blurry for the Mavs.

The odds of the Mavs tanking and landing in the top-seven in the 2016 NBA Draft are not high, but it could be worth a chance because who knows how many seasons Dirk has left, and whether or not Matthews will play like he did before the injury? The Mavs need to seriously consider the option of tanking next season, even though that is something that is not in the team’s nature.

    Mavs need to move on

The Mavs have to move on from this dramatic and entertaining episode of a romantic comedy and find some new players that can help this team win or throw next season away. Cuban is going to weigh every possible option to make sure the Mavs’ future is bright, but as of right now, it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
