Dallas Mavericks Offseason Finally Shows Addition
After watching a few of their own free agents, like Tyson Chandler, Al-Farouq Aminu and Monta Ellis, choose other destinations for the 2015-16 NBA regular season, the Dallas Mavericks reportedly are finally showing some addition.
According to NBA.com, Portland Trail Blazers shooting guard Wesley Matthews will join the Mavericks after rehabbing a torn Achilles sustained last March. Financial details aren’t known just yet, possibly because of the wait concerning Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, who’s said to be strongly considering a move to Dallas.

Matthews apparently turned down a four-year, $64 million offer from the Sacramento Kings in deciding on the Mavericks.
If we do a quick comparison between the departed Ellis and his obvious replacement, things look to be going in Dallas’ favor, at least to an extent.
Ellis stands 6’3” and weighs in at 185 pounds.
In contrast, Matthews goes 6’5” and weighs 220 pounds, both physical qualities giving the Mavericks a bigger presence than they had on the court with Ellis.
There’s not a huge difference between these players where on-the-court statistics are concerned, but Matthews does have the edge at both the free throw line and beyond the arc.
Of course, Ellis doesn’t have an Achilles injury that he’s nursing along, either.
The reality is that it will take some time before Dallas really knows what they’ve got in Matthews.
If healthy, Matthews could very well be an upgrade in the backcourt, and that’s really saying something given what Ellis meant to the Mavericks backcourt the last couple of seasons. Matthews is absolutely the type of scorer that can carry the load on any given night.

Obviously, if the acquisition of Matthews helps to entice Jordan to choose North Texas over Southern California, then this pick-up becomes a whole lot more meaningful, especially in the short term.
But one still has to be concerned about the fact that this franchise, as of this writing, is relying almost completely on an aging Dirk Nowitzki at power forward, Chandler Parsons at small forward and Matthews – the latter two on this short list both having sustained season-ending injuries just a matter of months ago.
There’s some that wonder whether Parsons will even be ready for the opening of next season, his injury seeming to suggest micro-fracture surgery in some circles.
So, the bleeding has stopped where the Mavericks roster is concerned, even if there’s quite a few more bandages needed in a short period of time if this team is going to end playoff-caliber again next season.
In the meantime, the wait continues on the all-important decision surrounding Jordan, who should have a decision to announce before the end of this weekend. Until then, the Mavericks offseason remains a very tense situation for both the franchise and the fan base.
