Marc Gasol Has “No Interest” In Signing With Los Angeles Lakers

Those hoping for another Gasol in purple and gold may want to skip to the next page. According to Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times, free agent center Marc Gasol has ruled out joining the Lakers this summer:

"Marc Gasol has no interest in the Lakers because of the uneasy last few years his brother spent with them, according to numerous people familiar with the situation."

The good news is that he was never leaving Memphis anyways.

Originally a draft choice of the Lakers in 2007, he was traded to Memphis for brother Pau in 2008. He grew up in Memphis, and has played every minute of his NBA career for Memphis. Marc Gasol is the walking embodiment of Memphis, as far as professional basketball is concerned.

Gasol would have filled a gaping void at center for the Lakers, but so would Hakeem Olajuwon in his prime; Los Angeles has roughly the same chance to acquire either player when free agency opens.

With the news leaking to the public, it’s safe to assume the Lakers’ front office already knew there was no chance of reeling in Gasol in free agency. In the grand scheme of things, this realization will allow fans to check him off their wish lists, and the team to focus on free agents that want to be in Los Angeles.
